3 major types:
- Indexes - journal articles listed by subject and author.
- Abstracts - journal articles and other literature listed by subject with brief summaries.
- Bibliographies - references to new literature, often lacking abstracts.
BIOLOGY

Biological Abstracts (BA)
BA is the major indexing/abstracting service for the world's biological sciences, both pure and applied. Over 9,000 periodicals are covered, including botany, zoology, agriculture, physiology, biochemistry, nutrition, food science, technology and fisheries. Each semi-monthly issue contains Author, Subject, Biosystematic and Generic Indexes and is cumulated semi-annually.

DENTAL

Dental Abstracts: A Selection of World Dental Literature
Selectively summarizes/highlights new dental literature. Individual issues lack indexes, however, there are annual Subject and Author Indexes.

Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL)
Covers over 600 journals in nursing and allied health fields such as physical therapy and medical technology. Includes book reviews, pamphlets, and A-V materials. Determine appropriate term(s) to use by first consulting CINAHL Subject Headings. Subject headings are similar to those used in Index Medicus.

MEDICINE

Index Medicus
International coverage of clinical medicine and the biomedical sciences in over 3,700 journals, indexed by subject and author. The Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) is the primary list of standard terms used in indexing Index Medicus and MEDLINE. MeSH is issued annually and is also part of the Cumulated Index Medicus.

SCIENCE -- GENERAL

Science Citation Index
Provides information on who cited a certain article or book and where. It is a way of doing a traditional literature search from the references in one article to the references in other articles. The Index consists of 4 major parts: Citation Index, Source Index, Permuterm Subject Index and Corporate Index. Use the Citation Index to find who cited a particular author. Use the Source Index to find full bibliographic information on the citing article.
