Finding Animal Physiology Literature for Zoology 430

Starting Your Research: sources for background information

Hawaii Voyager | http://uhmanoa.lib.hawaii.edu/
The online catalog of the University of Hawaii. Click on Guided Search and enter your keywords, such as birds AND physiology. Refine your search by opening a record and identifying the Library of Congress Subject Headings.

The library has many print encyclopedias that are focused on different taxa and subjects, including a 20 volume Encyclopedia of Life Sciences at QH302.5 .E525 2002 in the Scitech Reference Shelves, which can provide you with good overviews of your topic.

Paging at Hamilton Library
Books and journals at Hamilton Library in call numbers Q-V do not have to be paged. All other call numbers and books and journals in the Hawaiian Pacific collections must be paged by clicking on Request in the Voyager toolbar. The book or journal will be available to you in two hours for pick up. You will receive an e-mail when the item is ready. Items will be held for you for three days.

If an item published after 1976 is held only in Government Documents check to see if it is available online by searching MarciveWeb [http://micro189.lib3.hawaii.edu/ezproxy/details.php?dbId=1302]. If it is not available online, an Interlibrary Loan Request should be made. [All of the Government Documents held in Gov Docs Hamilton Library were either destroyed in the flood or are undergoing preservation treatment.

Ebsco Animals | http://micro189.lib3.hawaii.edu/ezproxy/details.php?dbId=38068
Ebsco Animals will give you brief background information on a particular species, such as the scientific name, the taxonomy, geographic location, and behavior of the animal.

PubMed | http://micro189.lib3.hawaii.edu/ezproxy/details.php?dbId=2095
In addition to being an index of scientific literature, PubMed has:
  • Taxonomy Browser to find the scientific name of an organism, the taxonomy, and the genome, if available. Just select Taxonomy Browser from the pull down menu and enter the common
  • Books to search on a topic in core textbooks that have been made available through PubMed. Click on Books in the toolbar. A single book can be selected to search or browse by clicking on the image of the bookcover

Other online sources for taxonomic information are included in the UH Manoa Libraries Zoology Resources page at Taxonomy Information Resources.

Indexes to connect to the scientific literature

All of the following indexes allow you to connect directly from a citation record to the full-text article online OR to the catalog, Hawaii Voyager, for print holdings OR to the interlibrary loan online request form. If we do not have the article you need online, or in print, make an Interlibrary Loan Request and the article will be sent to you within a few days (average time taken).

Open a record and click on the Find it or Check Availability link to connect directly to the online article, the journal, or to the Voyager record that will have the library call number.

Tip: Search more than one index to get the widest view of what has been published on your topic.

Biological Abstracts | http://micro189.lib3.hawaii.edu/ezproxy/details.php?dbId=171
Online version covers biological journal literature from 1969 to present. Make your search better by using the descriptors and selecting a field such as organism rather than using keyword anywhere.

If you wish to search Biological Abstracts for older literature, between 1926 and 1969, you will need to use the print version.

PubMed with UH Links | http://micro189.lib3.hawaii.edu/ezproxy/details.php?dbId=2095
Index covers medical literature but also has a lot of basic science not directly related to medicine. An excellent index for biochemistry, physiology, and molecular biology.

Web of Science | http://micro189.lib3.hawaii.edu/ezproxy/details.php?dbId=2540
Strong in the life sciences, covers the journal literature of all disciplines of science from 1980 to the present. The most up-to-date of the indexes. Select General Search to search on a topic or an author. Select Cited Reference Search to search for papers that cite a particular author or reference.

Zoological Record | http://micro189.lib3.hawaii.edu/ezproxy/details.php?dbId=2251
Online version covers zoological literature from 1978 to present. Some overlap with Biological Abstracts, but better coverage of international literature, and articles on insects and birds. Includes coverage of books and meetings that Biological Abstracts does not cover.
