Active Learning in Second Life(SL): Teaching in a Multi-User Virtual Environment
Second Life, a 3-D virtual reality simulation program, allows many users to interact with each other simultaneously, so they can build a virtual world together. Through avatars (virtual representations of themselves), students can speak, act, create objects—and apply course content in practical, hands-on, and role-playing situations, heightening their critical thinking skills via active learning.
Experienced SL faculty will take you on a tour of “UH Island,” the virtual world of our university, and demonstrate how they use this online, multi-user, educational world to present lecture material, engage and evaluate students in reviewing course content, stimulate collaborative learning between groups and individuals, and model leadership and professional skills.
Speakers:
» Estelle Codier, Nursing
» Peter Leong, Educational Technology
» Diane Nahl, Library and Information Science
» Dongping Zheng, Second Language Studies
