On Saturday, May 4, 2013, two separate robberies were reported on the UH Mānoa campus.

At 1:37 a.m. an unknown male robbed a security guard of his identification badge after the guard had issued a citation to the subject's vehicle that was parked at Hale Noelani. The subject first attempted to take the guard's citation computer but was unsuccessful. He then took the guard's identification badge. The subject drove away in dark green Honda CRV, license RRU 215. He is described as in his 20's, 5'6", 160 lbs., short black hair, wearing a gray t-shirt and shorts. HPD is handling the investigation.

At 3:40 a.m., two unknown males robbed a visiting male of his skateboard while at the Hale Aloha courtyard. A witness reported a verbal altercation between three men, then observed two of the men assaulting the third male in the courtyard before fleeing toward the Hale Wainani area. One male is described as in his 20's, 5'10", 200 lbs., black hair, wearing long-sleeve dress shirt and jeans. The second male is described as in his 20's, 5'8", 160 lbs., dirty blond hair, wearing a long-sleeve plaid dress shirt and jeans.

Last night, Tuesday, April 23, at approximately 11 p.m., UH Mānoa Campus Security received a report of a suspicious couple outside of Moore Hall.  A second report of a male running from the building was made while Campus Security officers attempted to make contact with the individuals who entered a parked vehicle fronting East West Road.  The vehicle fled west bound on Dole Street with one male and one female inside.

The male was reported as 6 ft., 160 pounds, slim build, late 20's, dirty blonde hair, and carrying a black laptop bag.  The female was reported as 5'2", 120 pounds, long blonde straight hair.  The vehicle was described as a white, Ford F-150.

Multiple rooms were discovered broken in to on the third floor of Moore Hall.  Two computers were reported taken. The Honolulu Police Department responded and is handling the investigation.

The University is in the process of evaluating its Campus Security program to determine what additional resources are needed in order to maximize security functions on campus; in the meantime, current resources are being redirected to supplement coverage for our campus.

This morning at approximately 6:30 a.m., UH Mānoa Campus Security received a report of multiple office break-ins on the fourth floor of Moore Hall. Several computers were taken. The Honolulu Police Department is handling the investigation.

This morning at approximately 6:45 a.m., a UHM Lyon Arboretum staff member arriving for work found a male assaulted near the Lyon Arboretum gate at 3860 Mānoa Road.

The road to the Lyon Arboretum gate and Mānoa Trail is currently closed.  

The Honolulu Police Department is conducting this possible robbery and ongoing investigation.

UPDATE: The gas leak at the UHM Campus Center construction site has been secured. Reentry is being allowed to the four evacuated buildings (Campus Center, Dean Hall, Miller Hall and Building 37).

A gas leak has been reported at the Campus Center construction site at UHM, between Campus Center and Miller Hall. Emergency personnel are in the area.

Evacuation is in progress. Stay away from the area.

Please be aware that theft of bicycles and mopeds on campus are on the rise. The areas of upper campus, lower campus and student housing areas have all experienced an increase in thefts.

The Honolulu Police Department has also begun citing mopeds parked on sidewalks surrounding the UH Mānoa campus.

Complaints of mopeds parking on the sidewalks have been received by the Honolulu Police Department and this is an advisory for the UH Mānoa community to use permissible parking. Citation fines are $35 and $55.

Update: Escapee Teddy Munet was captured and taken into custody by police in Kakaako around 7:30 tonight.

CrimeStoppers and the Honolulu Police Department are seeking the public's assistance in locating Teddy Munet who escaped on February 20, 2013, at approximately 8:05 a.m., from 777 Punchbowl Street. Munet was on his way to court for proceedings related to the homicide that occurred on July 19, 2012, at Kawainui Marsh.

He was last seen in the loading dock area and headed on foot toward Reed Lane. He may still be in the area and is considered and dangerous. DO NOT APPROACH.

DCK Pacific Construction is offering a $2,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the individual(s) responsible for damaging its tower crane at the UH Manoa campus.

The tower crane, located at the Information Technology Center job site on Correa Road, was discovered damaged on the morning of Tuesday, December 11, 2012.

The Honolulu Police Department is investigating this incident involving criminal property damage and trespassing. Anyone with information on this case is asked to call HPD at 911.

UH Mānoa Campus Security and the Honolulu Police Department are investigating a burglary at Saunders Hall this weekend, during which iMac computers were taken. Force was used to gain entry into the office; prymarks were found on the door.

At 12:45 a.m. this morning, November 9, 2012, a male UH Mānoa student reported an aggravated assault that occurred near the ROTC building on Lower Campus Road. The student was walking back to his room at the residence halls when three unknown males chased him and a fourth male grabbed him from behind. The student reported being punched and cut with an unknown object. The four males fled out the Waialae gate.  

Three of the assailants are described as:

One male: 18-20 years old, 5'6", 160 pounds, medium build, long shoulder length hair wearing a baseball cap, tee-shirt and jeans.

Two other males: 18-20 years old, 5'6", 160 pounds, medium build, crew cut, both with tee-shirts, (one striped) and jeans.

At approximately 2:00 p.m. today, October 19, 2012, a UH Mānoa student reported to Campus Security that she was accosted by an unknown male as she walked down the access road below the Hale Wainani student residence toward lower campus.

The student said she first noticed the male sitting on a parked moped by the Hale Noelani Market.  As she walked to lower campus, he followed her on his moped and tried talking with her. The student said the man grabbed her wrist, but she pulled free and went over to a group of students nearby.

The moped rider then drove away. The student reported the incident to Campus Security.

The suspect is described as a male in his 20s, 5’8’ or 5’9”, 180 pounds, with long curly dreadlocks and a moustache, and wearing dirty long pants and a faded shirt.

According to UH Mānoa Campus Security, two offices at Bilger Hall were burglarized and computers were taken during the evening of October 18, 2012.

The discovery that door locks were pried open to gain entry at the Bilger offices was learned at 1 a.m. this morning during a regular Campus Security patrol. Office occupants were interviewed. The Honolulu Police Department is assisting with the investigation.

A burglary occurred at Dean Hall this weekend, resulting in four missing computers.

The computers were last seen on Friday, August 31, at about 4:30 p.m.  They were reported missing by a faculty member on Saturday morning, September 1.  

The perpetrator/perpetrator(s) gained entry to Dean Hall through a window.

Campus Security is issuing a reminder to make sure windows and doors are closed and secured at the end of the day.

Expect traffic delays around the UH Mānoa campus next week, as nearly 4,000 students move into campus residence halls beginning the week of August 13.

The official days for Mānoa Move-In 2012 are Tuesday, August 14, Thursday, August 16, and Friday, August 17, which is a state holiday (Admissions Day).  Move-in activities will start at 8:00 a.m. on all three days, and may affect traffic on Dole Street and University Avenue.

Motorists are advised to be especially vigilant along Dole Street due to increased traffic activity, and frequent stopping or slowing of cars.

On Tuesday, August 14, students will begin moving into Hale Aloha (Ilima, Lehua, Lokelani and Mokihana), Hale Laulima, Hale Kahawai, and Johnson Hall. Residents moving into Hale Aloha will be queued along Lower Campus Road from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.  Residents moving into Hale Kahawai and Hale Laulima during this time will enter on East-West Road and be queued in the residence hall driveway.

Please note that on Tuesday, from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon, the east-bound lane of Dole Street fronting Johnson Hall will be coned off to assist with active unloading. No parking will be allowed along Dole Street during moving hours.  After 12:00 noon, while the lane will not be coned off, cars will stop at their own risk.  

On Thursday, August 16, students checking into Hale Anuenue, Gateway House and Frear Hall will be queued along Lower Campus Road from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

On Friday, August 17, a state holiday, residents of Hale Noelani and Hale Wainani apartments will move in.

UH Mānoa Campus Security said that today, Tuesday, August 7, 2012, at about 6:40 p.m., a UH Mānoa summer student was jogging along Dole Street, when she noticed that a male riding a large black motorcycle was following her.

The motorcycle rider passed the student multiple times on Dole Street as if trying to talk to the jogger, who was wearing earphones.   

The suspect drove his motorcycle into the access road for the Hale Aloha towers, and unsuccessfully tried to reach for the student as she jogged by.  When she ran toward the voices of people nearby, the suspect rode away.

The suspect is described as in his late 20s or early 30s, 6 feet tall, 180 pounds, medium build, with a brown crew-cut, and wearing a white T-shirt and jeans.

Campus Security is warning pedestrians walking near UH Mānoa at night to be aware of a male driver calling out to people, especially female students. He then exposes himself and masturbates.

Campus Security has been made aware of an incident that took place on the night of Tuesday, July 17, 2012, at approximately 10:30 P.M.

A student was walking along University Avenue near the Maile Way intersection. As she passed a parked black sedan, possibly a Volkswagen, the male in the driver's seat called out to her, "Hey!  Hey!"  As she looked at him, he was exposed and masturbating.

The student ran onto campus, but later thought she observed the same vehicle on campus. Officers from Campus Security and HPD were contacted, but the suspect vehicle drove away before their arrival.

The male is described as light-skinned, in his 20s, 180 pounds, with heavy build, and black shoulder-length hair.

HPD has notified Campus Security about an incident that occurred last night at Kanewai Park, a popular public park located on Dole Street east of the UH Mānoa campus. HPD said that around 10:30 p.m. on Thursday evening, May 3, 2012, a UH Mānoa student was walking alone toward campus on the public sidewalk adjacent to this recreational facility.

She said a car stopped behind her as she continue to walk, and that an unidentified male grabbed her by the arm and pulled her toward the car.

When the student yelled, she was released -- allowing her to get away from the male and the scene. She was not able to provide a description of the male or the vehicle.

At about 3:30am today, a student reported that a female UH Mānoa student said that she had been sexually assaulted. She had been at Kanewai Park and when leaving she was grabbed from behind by an unknown male. Other voices were heard and the male ran away.

The only description available is it was a tall male. The direction in which he fled is not known.

If anyone was in the area of Kanewai Park or Dole Street adjacent to Hawaiian Studies and may have seen or heard anything, please call Campus Security at 956-6911.

Last year at this time, a UH Manoa graduate student in the Geography Department surprised a would-be burglar in his office. The burglar ran, and in the chase dropped his backpack. Inside were burglary tools and electronic parts that may have been part of a surveillance system.

On Friday, a USB key logger was discovered in a Saunders Hall computer lab, also in the Geography Department, according to a email alert send out by staff in the College of Social Sciences.



When attached to a computer, a key logger simply records everything that is typed and saves it to its own internal memory to be retrieved later. It can be used to steal confidential information such as accounts and passwords. It doesn't require any additional software to be installed on the computer, so it can be put in place quickly and easily.

Here's what the device would look like when installed.

The room where the device was discovered is used for the department's lecture series, according to its web site.

The email alert advised "anyone who may have entered their personal passwords while using Saunders 443B within the last few weeks to change their passwords now."

In addition, it suggested that when using any public computer, "as a precaution against future risks you may want to inspect your keyboard connection to ensure that a key logger is not attached.

(2:56 p.m.) The person of interest was apprehended by police off campus around 2:30 pm. All clear. Crisis counseling is available, call 956-7927.

(1:15 p.m.) The person of interest is described as 5'3", 110 lbs., 20 years old, Japanese male, buzz cut. Last seen wearing black/blue long sleeve button down shirt, grey slacks, black shoes, with bag, possible beanie.

(12:30 p.m.) This is an update to the previous UH Alert sent at noon today. The person of interest has been spotted at the Hawaiian Studies loi on Dole Street. Stay away from the area.

(12:05 p.m.) This is an official emergency notification. HPD and UH Mānoa Campus Security are investigating a report of a distraught male who is possibly armed with a weapon. The person of interest is described as an Asian male approximately 5'7" tall, wearing black and blue long-sleeve shirt, dark shorts and a baseball cap, and carrying a blue backpack. Until this situation has been declared safe by HPD, please stay away from Manoa Stream behind East-West Center, Waahila Faculty Housing and School of Hawaiian Knowledge. Please take precautions. If you see this person or anything suspicious, call 911 for HPD or 956-6911 immediately.

CrimeStoppers and the Honolulu Police Department are seeking the public’s assistance in locating a male who is wanted for assaulting a female.

On March 15, 2012, at approximately 9:00 p.m., a female was walking on University Avenue prior Vancouver Avenue when she was approached from behind by an unknown male. The male pushed her to the ground and assaulted her with a knife. The victim struggled with the male and was able to flee.

Suspect described as a Caucasian male, 40-45 years old, 5'8"-6'0", 180-200 lb. with brown hair.

A student reported that, at 12:20 a.m. on Saturday morning, March 10, 2012, in the Hale Aloha Ilima residence hall, an unknown male forcibly fondled her in an elevator.

The student told Campus Security that, when she got into the elevator, an unknown man was already in the elevator cab. When the elevator door closed, he grabbed her but she fought him off. When the elevator door opened, she screamed and fled.

The suspect is described as a Caucasian male in his 20s, 6'2"-6'4" with a medium build, 180-200 lbs., short dark hair, and dark-colored eyes. He wore an olive-green T-shirt and smelled strongly of liquor.

Remember that any sexual act committed without consent is considered sexual assault and is a serious crime.

On Monday February 27, 2012, a student reported to Campus Security that she believes that she had been given a drink containing a "date-rape drug” after being approached by two males she did not know.
The reported incident began at Hemenway Hall in Mānoa Gardens at about 6:00 p.m. on Friday, February 24. After consuming the drink, she has no memory of the rest of the night, awakening in an off-campus apartment with a person she didn’t know.

The student reported symptoms consistent with the ingestion of date-rape drug substances: a rapid onset of intoxication out of proportion to what alcohol has been consumed and reported memory loss.

There is an active investigation into this incident.

To protect yourself, Campus Security warns everyone not to leave drinks unattended and to be wary of accepting drinks from anyone you do not know well. It is recommended that, in drinking situations, to be with friends and to look out for each other. If you or your friends exhibit symptoms including dizziness and/or nausea, memory loss, and breathing or motion difficulties, get help. Remember, 1) date-rape drugs are illegal and 2) sex without consent, even under the influence of drugs or alcohol, is considered rape.

The Law School Library was burglarized after hours (late last night/early this morning), probably between 1:00 am and 9:00 am.

No one was injured but some offices and files were broken into; some items were taken.

Campus Security and Honolulu Police responded quickly this morning, have taken statements from staff and some students, dusted for prints, and assigned a detective.

We are reviewing all available sources of information at this time but need your kokua.

Tonight at approximately 8 pm two male students were robbed at gunpoint of cellphones and a backpack near the Hale Noelani residence hall. One of the students was forced into the assailant's car but was able to escape soon afterwards.

The vehicle is described as four-doored, white, lowered and with dark tinted windows, possibly a Honda or Acura. Its license plate may start with the digits "RGF-3".

Assailant is described as in his early 20's, about 6 feet tall, black crew-cut hair and very tanned complexion.

A student reported that she was sexually assaulted this morning, Tuesday, November 22, at 6:40 a.m. in the Kennedy Theatre women's dressing room/shower area.

The suspect is described as a dark-complexioned male, 180-200 pounds, 5'8", with brownish, bleached bushy hair. He wore a flannel checkered-print long-sleeved shirt and carried a backpack.

Early today at about 3:20 am a female student was accosted and injured in an assault by an unknown male near Murakami Stadium as she was returning to her residence hall.

Suspect is a tall Caucasian male wearing blue jeans and a dark blue long-sleeved buttoned shirt with dark shiny shoes.

Campus Security is advising the University community not to touch or handle any suspicious package and call Campus Security at 956-6911 immediately.

Campus Security is warning people who are walking to and from their cars parked in the residential area between University Avenue and Mānoa Road to be aware of a male driver who stops pedestrians, especially female students, on the pretense of asking for driving directions, who then exposes himself and masturbates.

Today around noon, a student reported to Campus Security that she and a friend were walking to their car near College Hill, when a male driver stopped his vehicle to ask for directions to the freeway. The suspect spoke very softly, so the student moved closer to the car to better hear what he was saying. When the student looked down through the open window, she saw that the driver had exposed himself and was masturbating. The driver sped off when the student walked away.

The suspect is described as in his 40s, with short blond hair and mustache, possibly weighing about 150 pounds. He wore a white shirt, khaki shorts and sunglasses. He may have been driving a “green Jeep or small SUV.”

In an incident of this nature, Campus Security suggests the following:

Be aware of your surroundings and trust your instincts. If you feel unsafe or uncomfortable, in any situation, act on that feeling. Your safety is the first priority.

If you find yourself in this type of situation, even if the suspect has left the scene, call Campus Security and officers will respond to your location.

This past Monday's campus-wide electrical outage gives us an opportunity to review appropriate responses to the kinds of emergencies that may arise on campus. While some are merely inconvenient, others may have more serious outcomes. Taking simple steps to prepare in advance can minimize the impact of the emergency and make a big difference in ensuring your own safety and well-being, as well as that of your family and colleagues, our campus and community.

For power outages, some tips to remember for home, workplace and campus:

READINESS

• Have back-up light sources available (flashlights, emergency hallway lights); avoid using open flames (candles, lighters).
• Back-up your computer files regularly and install surge protectors.
• For those dealing with high-security materials, such as cash or confidential information, have procedures in place for unexpected shut-downs.

RESPONSE

• Remain calm; provide assistance to others if necessary.
• Turn off and unplug electronic equipment and appliances.
• Move cautiously to a lighted area. You may need to evacuate the campus building; however, do not use the elevator.
• If trapped in an elevator when power goes out, don’t panic. Call Campus Security (956-6911) or the point of contact listed in the elevator to inform them of your situation, then wait for trained and equipped personnel to release you. Never attempt to leave the stalled elevator on your own.
• If in a life-threatening situation on campus, call 911 after contacting Campus Security. This will provide more on-scene details to the emergency dispatcher, who will be in touch with the response team (ambulance or fire department). Security will help guide the team to your location.

April is National Sexual Assault Awareness Month, so the Mānoa campus has stated today April 26 as Denim Day at Mānoa. Staff is encouraged to wear denim pants to eliminate persistent harmful attitudes regarding why, where, and how women are raped. The Mānoa campus community is encouraged to make a statement against sexual assault and participate by wearing denim.

Campus Security received a report early this morning, April 15, about a possible sexual assault at a Student Housing apartment last night.

The Honolulu Police Department is investigating. No description of any suspect is available at this time.
