Crime Advisory
THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 10, 1998
UHM has been experiencing an alarming rate of thefts of computers and computer accessories. Since the first day of classes for the Fall 1998 semester we have received reports of thefts and burglaries in the combined value of in excess of $33,000.The common aspect of these reports are the fact that there are no signs of forced entry, or any evident that an "outside" influence is present. Which leads us to feel that an individual who has access to the area where the thefts occur is perpetrating these incidents.
Campus Security recommends that you take the following precautions:
- Account for all of the keys to your areas.
- Establish and enforce a strict key control policy.
- Publish an office security policy and guide that will cover at least:
- Visitor control.
- Who is responsible for ensuring your doors are secured, etc.
- Conduct security awareness meetings with your staff.
- Explore the possibility of purchasing some type of physical security devices for your computers.
