Moped thief nabbed on campus
TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 16, 1999

At about 6:20 a.m. on Feb. 16, 1999, the Campus Security dispatcher received a call reporting two suspicious males at the moped/bicycle parking area of the Gateway residence hall. Officer Elias Kona was dispatched. Upon his arrival, Kona did not initially observe any individuals in the immediate area, however he did see a late model, gold colored Honda. Officer Kona decided to block the Honda from being able to exit the parking area.

As soon as the Campus Security vehicle pulled up behind the Honda, the driver and passenger abruptly departed the vehicle and ran in different directions. Officer Kona gave chase and was able to detain one suspect near Frear Hall. HPD assistance was requested.

Upon the arrival of HPD, the detained suspect (non student), was arrested, additional information gained revealed that the Honda was a stolen vehicle, and the suspect in custody identified his accomplice as another non student. Further investigation revealed that the Honda contained evidence of several other crimes.

At least two other arrests have since been made in connection with this case, including one at a subsequent raid of an alleged moped "chop shop" in Ewa Beach.

Campus Security would like to recognize and commend the Student Housing witnesses who were very observant, and concerned about their fellow students and residents property.
