The department consists of 36 departmental personnel. A chief, one captain, one lieutenant, six sergeants, twenty two patrol officers (identified by the standard law enforcement dark blue uniform), one clerk/typist and a dispatcher.
Before being selected by the department, each recruit must pass an extensive screening and background check conducted by the State of Hawaii Department of Public Safety. After selection recruits are required to serve six months of Field Training and an Evaluation Program before being assigned patrol duties on their own.
The department was established by the Board of Regents and empowered to enforce federal, state, and local laws as well as university rules, regulations, policies and procedures.
