East Asia Now is intended as a "capstone" course for M. A. students with an East Asian concentration. It gives students an opportunity move out of the "box" of their (usually) country-focused programs and think about the countries that they have been studying in a comparative context through the examination of contemporary issues of region-wide concern. The tentative list of topics to be taken up in this version of East Asia Now include: imperialism and its legacies, nationalism, Confucianism and filial piety, popular culture, gender issues, regionalism, and transnationalism.
