Freeman Foundation Undergraduate Study Grants to Asia Awarded
These undergraduate awards are part of a four-year grant to the University of Hawai'i Asian Studies Program for the support of undergraduate education. They are open to Asian Studies majors and minors. The Freeman Foundation is a private foundation which seeks to encourage greater knowledge and understanding between Asia and the U.S.
Awards for 2003
Fourteen awards for Manoa undergraduates to study in Asia were made for 2003. The recipients and their study plans include:
David Doles (Honolulu) to attend the Tagalog On Site program at the University of the Philippines-Los Baños.
Darcy Gibo (Honolulu) to study language and culture at the University of the Ryukyus beginning October 2003.
Shawn Gray ((Honolulu) to participate in the Thai Rural Development Course during the 2003 summer session at Thammasat University, Bangkok.
Amelia Hicks (Honolulu) for a 12-week internship with the Mlup Baitong organization in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.
Scott E. Hovey (Honolulu) to pursue language and culture studies at the University of the Philippines-Diliman.
Michelle C. Isa (Kailua) to study at the Center for Study Abroad Japanese Language and Society in Kobe, Japan.
Adrienne Lahtela (Honolulu) to study Japanese language at Nanzan University.
Kitty Leelaamornvichet (Honolulu) for Chinese Language studies in Hainan, China.
Anthony Loiseleur (Honolulu) to study language and culture at the University of the Ryukyus beginning in October of 2003.
Leilani Marquez (Honolulu) to study Southeast Asian history and culture at the National University of Singapore.
Cesare Polenghi (Honolulu) to study traditional music in Japan including gagaku, Gion Festival, geisha and Obon Festival in Mie Prefecture.
Justin Jiro Sakai (San Mateo, CA) to study language and culture at Sophia University (Tokyo, Japan).
Lisa Tanikawa (Honolulu) to study language and culture in Japan.

Freeman Foundation Undergraduate Study Grants to Asia Awarded
Six fellowship2 to study in Asia for undergraduates were awarded in 2002. The recipients and their study plans include:
Lani Hansen (Honolulu) to attend the Traditional Theatre Training summer intensive workshop in Kyoto and the Summer Session of Asian Studies at Sophia University in Tokyo. Lani is a journalism major with an Asian Studies minor.
Kenneth Ikemoto (Aiea) to take summer courses in Japanese art and literature at Sophia University in Tokyo. He is an Asian Studies major.
Mark-Roel Pascua (Waipahu) to study Korean culture, society and language at Ewha Woman's University in Seoul this summer as part of his Asian Studies major.
Sayaka Takeuchi (Honolulu) to study Chinese language and culture in the Summer Language Program at Hainan University. She is an Asian Studies major.
Constaninos Vrakas (Honolulu), majoring in Asian Studies, also to attend the Summer Language Program at Hainan.
Scott Williams (Honolulu) to study for one year at Taisho University in Tokyo as part of his Asian Studies major.
