Short-term Options
We offer three broad program areas. In addition, we will cooperate with you in a custom-designed program focusing on a particular area or issue in Asia and the Pacific Islands. Examples include introductory programs preceding a group study abroad, Hawaiian Sovereignty, Hawai'i's Plantation Experience or a focus on Buddhism in East Asia.
When Programs may be arranged for any time period, however, January, May and Summer have proved to be the most popular times. January takes advantage of the break between semesters for schools on a semester system. May marks the end of the school year, here and at many other institutions. Of course, summer is a time when almost everyone is on break from school.
International institutions follow a different schedule, and those schools can be accommodated. Several Japanese schools already have taken advantage of Short-term's inherent flexibility.
Planning a Short-term Course
Our Short-term in Hawai'i offerings generally include four (4) lectures and two (2) fieldtrips a week (15-20 instructional hours), and most schools choose either a 2 or 3 or 4 week program. Thus:
| 2 week | 3 week | 4 week |
|---|---|---|
| 8 lectures 4 field trips 30-40 instructional hours |
12 lectures 6 fields trips 45-60 instructional hours |
16 lectures 8 field trips 60-80 instructional hours |
The course hours can be increased by supplementing the program with additional lectures by your own faculty, class assignments and papers.
Number of Students The minimum number of students for a Short-term in Hawai'i program is 14. The final count of students, including names, must be received in our program office at the time of payment. Should you anticipate any difficulty in submitting this information by the deadline, please contact our program office.
What We have divided our offerings into 3 broad themes, the Arts, Religions, and Multiculturalism but these themes are by no means fixed. Feel free to mix and match. The lectures may also be combined with fieldtrips, designed to enhance understanding. But wait! There is more! We also offer some additional opportunities that are both educational and relaxing.
We have provided a form to help you get started. It reflects the 3 broad themes and you can mix-and-match lectures and fieldtrips to put together something that you might like. When you click submit, it will print in our office. You might want to print a copy of the web page for your own reference.
Once you have requested a program, our staff will draft an itinerary, including possible lecture topics with coordinating fieldtrip destinations, and submit the plan to your office for review. Based upon your interests and recommendations we will revise the program accordingly and submit a final draft for your proposal to your chair and/or off-campus programs office.
