United Nations Seminars

United Nations Global Seminars are designed as an intense, three-day exploration of significant contemporary issues affecting the Asia-Pacific region. Students and young professionals engage with scholars, artists, and experts working in the global network of the United Nations and international universities. Small group discussions, as well as community interaction, help participants analyze concepts raised in scheduled presentations.

UN University chose the University of Hawaii as the site for its first seminar in the United States.

The 2004 seminar was devoted to "Negotiating Pacific Identities: Ethnicity, Encounters and Self-determination", and was held at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa, March 18-22, 2004. UHM's partners were Chaminade University, the East-West Center,, Hawai'i Pacific University, Kapi'olani Community College, and United Nations Association, Hawai'i Division.

UN University and UHM held another seminar in 2005 devoted to "Consuming Cultures: Change, Tradition and Choice in Asia and the Pacific". Once again it was on the Manoa campus, May 18-21, 2005.
