BASICS:  Brief Alcohol Screening & Intervention for College Students
BASICS is offered for all UH students who may want to explore their alcohol and drug use, but the main goal of the program is to educate students about risky behaviors and harmful consequences of alcohol and drug abuse. BASICS is appropriate for you if you use alcohol and/or drugs, or you are interested in talking with someone about your drinking or drug use and how it compares with that of other students. BASICS will provide you with an opportunity to assess your own drinking/drug using behaviors, and to identify options for potential changes that might work for you to reduce your risk.

All BASICS sessions are one-on-one meetings with you and a BASICS counselor. It takes two sessions, typically 1 week apart, to complete BASICS. The program is designed to assist students in examining their own behavior in a judgment-free environment. BASICS sessions are entirely confidential. BASICS will not disclose any information from the sessions to anyone, including a student's parents, without written permission from the student.

Session I: 1½ to 2 hours: You will talk with a BASICS counselor, answer some questions, and then complete a questionnaire packet.

Session II: 1½ to 2 hours: You will receive a personalized feedback packet that provides information about your use of alcohol and other drugs and how your use and level of risk compares to other UH students. You will review the feedback packet with a BASICS counselor and set goals to help reduce your risk of developing future problems or maintain your current low-risk habits.

The BASICS program is located in the Queen Liliuokalani Center for Student Services (QLC) building room #313D.

You will receive a phone call from a BASICS counselor to schedule your appointments within one to two days.
