BASICS:  Brief Alcohol Screening & Intervention for College Students
Welcome to the University Health Services' Alcohol & Other Drug Education Program (ADEP). You have been referred to us for an assessment of your alcohol and other drug use because someone is concerned about your alcohol and/or drug use and/or you want to take a closer look at your personal use of alcohol and/or drugs.

What is BASICS?

BASICS stands for Brief Alcohol Screening & Intervention for College Students. This program is offered for all UH students who may want to explore their alcohol and drug use, but the main goal of the program is to educate students about risky behaviors and harmful consequences of alcohol and drug abuse. Some students attend BASICS to fulfill a campus sanction, while others come because they have concerns or are curious about their personal alcohol and/or drug use. The program is designed to assist students in examining their own behavior in a judgment-free environment.

The ADEP counselor will provide objective feedback, based on questionnaires filled out by the student, and may encourage lower-risk drinking and/or drug using behaviors. BASICS will provide the information and guidance, but how a student chooses to use it is entirely up to him/her. BASICS sessions are entirely confidential. We will not disclose any information from the sessions to anyone, including a student's parents, without written permission from the student.

BASICS IS NOT a "Just Say No" or abstinence-only program. BASICS IS NOT AA (Alcoholics Anonymous) or a treatment/rehab program. BASICS WILL NOT fulfill a court-ordered sanction.

Why participate in BASICS?

BASICS is appropriate for you if you use alcohol and/or drugs, or you are interested in talking with someone about your drinking or drug use and how it compares with that of other students. BASICS will provide you with an opportunity to assess your own drinking/using behaviors, and to identify options for potential changes that might work for you to reduce your risk.

What should I expect?

BASICS is administered by the Alcohol & Other Drug Education Program (ADEP) staff at UH Manoa. All BASICS sessions are one-on-one meetings with you and an ADEP counselor. It takes two sessions, typically 1 week apart, to complete BASICS.

Session I: 60-90 minutes: You will talk with an ADEP counselor, answer some questions, and then complete a questionnaire packet.

Session II: 60-90 minutes: You will receive a personalized feedback that provides information about your use of alcohol and other drugs and how your use and level of risk compares to other UH students. You will review the feedback packet with an ADEP counselor and set goals to help reduce your risk of developing future problems or maintain your current low-risk habits.
