HEALTH PROMOTION PROGRAM
Queen Lili'uokalani Center for Student Services; 956-3574
Health Promotion Section objectives and activities serve the University Health Service goal of achieving and maintaining a healthy student body and campus community, and the University's goals of increasing student retention and maximizing student learning.
Health Promotion involves not only providing education on health topics and concerns, but also assessing the health of the community, promoting policy and program development to create an environment conducive to good health, and evaluating efforts to promote healthy behavior change.
The Health Promotion section objectives and activities serve five long-range goals:
- Promote optimal use of UHSM in-house services by the eligible population. This entails marketing clinical services through fairs, published materials, and mass media such as posters.
- Promote the development and/or maintenance of life-long patterns of healthy behavior among all members of the University community. This includes assessing the population (and different sub-groups) to determine areas of need; developing effective strategies to increase healthy behaviors, and; evaluating those strategies to determine success and/or adjust activities and objectives.
- Contribute to the public health of the campus community. This involves advocating for policies that contribute to healthy behaviors; disseminating information about disease prevention, and; working with endorsed health insurance plans and other entities to encourage insurance coverage for all students.
- Assist UHSM in providing high quality services in the most efficient, effective manner. (These activities involve the entire UHSM, including the Health Promotion section.) This includes assessing patient satisfaction and working with others on quality improvement and risk management plans and projects.
- Contribute to the educational, research and community service mission of the University. The section staff conduct their own research and evaluation; mentor student learners and researchers, collaborate with other faculty and staff, and; provide opportunities for the integration of service with learning.
