Post-Flood Health Advisory for Manoa Campus - 11.05.04
Many people were involved in the clean-up efforts after the recent flood on campus. Since the work may involve working in mud and standing water and possible contact with contaminated materials, concerns have been raised regarding potential health hazards. Some particular concerns and advice:
- When working in dirty and possibly contaminated environment, it is important to remember to wear protective clothing, gloves and over-shoes. Wash hands frequently. Clean and treat any cuts/scrapes as soon as possible. Update your tetanus immunization.
- Be careful not to over-exert. Excessive fatigue leads to higher possibilty of injury such as sprains/strains and falls.
- If skin irritation develops from exposure to mud/water, and contaminated materials, wash off quickly and seek medical attention.
- If respiratory symtoms - cough, wheeze, shortness of breath - develop, seek medical attention.
- People with chronic respiratory conditions, known allergies, and chronic skin conditions, should avoid contact with molds, fumes, and other irritants.
- Leptospirosis may be a concern. Do not immerse in flood water or mud if you have open skin lesions such as cuts and sores. Seek medical attention if you develop signs of illness - fever, chills, nausea/vomiting, headaches/stiff neck.
- Do not pick up any dead animals left by the flood waters.
