University Health Services will use evidence-based practices to identify and provide intervention services for students with or at high risk of problem drinking and/or other drug abuse. The University of Hawaii is one of twelve grantees under this program to target college alcohol and other drug abuse by expanding existing campus services. Other recipients include University of Massachusetts at Amherst, University of California at Los Angeles, and University of Arizona at Tucson. In a news release issued July 6, 2005, SAMHSA Administrator Charles Curie said, "College and university health service centers provide an ideal setting to identify and intervene early with students who are abusing drugs or alcohol. Brief and early intervention can help keep students on track towards healthy and productive lives." |
