Banner production forms update from JInitiator to Java Plug-in (JPL)

In preparation for the Banner migration, Oracle's JInitiator will be disabled for all Banner Production Forms URLs (banner.sis.hawaii.edu). In place of it, we will use Sun's Java Plug-in (JPI). Once the change is made, access to the Banner forms will automatically use the most recent version of Sun Java installed on your computer. If you do not have a current version of Sun Java, you will be prompted to download the latest version.

Important changes to UH Mail Alias/Listserv services

On February 22, 2010, Information Technology Services(ITS) will be making significant changes to the Mail Alias and Listserv services.

1. The Mail Alias service WILL BE RETIRED. Mail Alias owners who would like to continue to use their lists will need to request a conversion of their Mail Alias to a Listserv. To submit a request, login to http://www.hawaii.edu/username and click on the "Request conversion of Mail Alias to LISTSERV" link. If you no longer use your Mail Alias you may click on the "Delete a Mail Alias List" link. Failure to convert your Mail Alias will mean your list will no longer work.

2. The Listserv email address will change. Messages intended for your Listserv will need to be addressed to:

<listname>@lists.hawaii.edu

instead of

<listname>@hawaii.edu

Beginning December 1, 2009, messages to your Listserv can be sent to either <listname>@lists.hawaii.edu or <listname>@hawaii.edu. However, after February 22, your Listserv will only receive messages addressed to <listname>@lists.hawaii.edu. Messages sent to <listname>@hawaii.edu will bounce back to the sender with an error.

3. Listserv commands sent via email will need to be addressed to listserv@lists.hawaii.edu. Listserv commands can still be submitted through the Listserv Management Web Interface (http://listserv.hawaii.edu).

Please let your list subscribers know of these changes.

To check which Mail Alias(es) that you own, login to http://www.hawaii.edu/username with your UH Username and password, and then click on "Edit a Mail Alias List". To check which Listserv(s) that you own, login to http://listserv.hawaii.edu with your email address and Listserv account password.

If you have any questions or need assistance, please contact the ITS Help Desk at (808) 956-8883, (800) 558-2669 toll-free from the neighbor islands, or by email at help@hawaii.edu.

        Windows: IE6 and IE7 0-Day Vulnerability Reported

ISC SANS reported a new 0-day vulnerability in Internet Explorer (IE) 6 and 7 in the way the web browser uses CSS/STYLE information. Symantec verified the bug; exploit code was published in the BugTraq mailing list. Microsoft released security advisory 977981 confirming the new 0-day vulnerability in IE6 and IE7, which could cause remote code execution or the web browser to crash. So far, there are no known active attacks in the wild.

Affected Software:
IE6 on Windows 2000 SP4
IE6 and IE7 on Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008

Not Affected:
IE5.01 SP4 and IE8

It is advised that IE users ensure that their anti-virus definitions are up-to-date, disable JavaScript, and only visit trusted web sites until a fix is released by Microsoft.

Workarounds are published in the Microsoft Security Advisory 977981.
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/advisory/977981.mspx

To turn off JavaScript, select the "Tools" menu in IE, then click "Internet Options," the "Security" tab and the "Internet" content zone. Next, click "Custom Level" and in the "Settings" box, click "Disable" under "Active scripting." Click "OK" in the current dialog box, as well as the next.

Expectations during this outage:
1. If customers happen to go to MyUH during the first 10-15 minutes of the outage they will get a server connection error during the cutover time while new load balancing servers are put into place.

2. Temporary channel errors on the home page might be displayed for early initial customers logging into MyUH within the first 5 minutes of the new servers starting up. This can be remedied by logging off and then logging in again.

Windows: McAfee VirusScan Enterprise 8.7 with patch 2 available

For UH faculty, staff, and students using Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows server 2003, Windows server 2008, Windows server 2008 Release 2, and 64-bit Windows:

McAfee VirusScan Enterprise (VSE) 8.7 with patch 2 is available for download. This new version of McAfee anti-virus software is required for Windows 7 and Windows server 2008 Release 2 support.

It is recommended that you continue using VSE 8.5 with patch 8 for Windows XP and Vista computers with less than 1 GB RAM. For Windows computers with at least 1 GB RAM and a "faster" processor, i.e. computers less than 2 years old, you may install VSE 8.7 with patch 2. Otherwise, please continue to use VSE 8.5 with patch 8.

New VSE 8.7 Installer

A new UH installer for VSE 8.7 with patch 2 (uhvse87p2.exe) has been created. It's intended for new Windows computers and any computers running Windows XP or Vista with 1 GB (or more) RAM and a "faster" processor. The new UH installer includes patch 2, scan engine 5300, McAfee agent 4.0 (formerly known as CMA) and pre-configured settings for UH.

Download the new UH installer (uhvse87p2.exe) from http://www.hawaii.edu/antivirus/ or obtain a copy of the ITS CD ROM. The UH installer is huge (84.9 MB).

Still have VSE 8.0?

If you have VirusScan Enterprise 8.0 installed, it is highly recommended that you upgrade to VSE 8.7 with patch 2 (computers with 1 GB RAM or more) or VSE 8.5 with patch 8 (computers with less than 1 GB RAM). VSE 8.0 does not support incremental scan engines. McAfee will end support for VSE 8.0 in March 2010.
