Several reasons. While the old hawaii.edu site served us well for several years, it relied on design, interface, programming and architecture that would politely be called out-dated.
The new site is more manageable, and is a more cohesive, comprehensive and up-to-date online presence for the University of Hawaii System.
In conjunction with the redesign, we are also introducing a new URL naming system for the 10 UH campuses. The UH System homepage is www.hawaii.edu. The UH Manoa homepage is www.manoa.hawaii.edu, and you can find any other campus by plugging in its location in front of hawaii.edu (for example: www.hawaii.hawaii.edu, www.hilo.hawaii.edu, www.windward.hawaii.edu, etc.).
No. The University of Hawaii continues to use the system seal and its campus variations for non-athletic purposes. Updates on the new logo development are available online.
Until a new logo and branding strategy are officially adopted by the Board of Regents, layout and design styles on UH websites should be considered transitional.
The best place to look for campus-level departments is on the homepage for that campus. Each campus homepage links from the footer of every System site page. You can also use the newly improved search function on the system site header to find your department.
For your information, we are updating the listing of available degrees and programs and will want to link from there directly to the relevant departmental information.
Homepages and contact information for System offices are listed in the new site, if yours is missing, use the feedback form or contact content@hawaii.edu.
If you are a System office, you can get on board with the newly made-over hawaii.edu site by contacting the site content coordinator, Jeela Ongley in Creative Services. Make an appointment with her to discuss your site and your needs.
Simply because they have not been migrated into the new templates yet. Patience, grasshopper...
If you see strange characters such as blank squares or question marks appearing in Hawaiian words, that means your browser is not able to correctly display Hawaiian spelling, which requires two diacritical markings, the okina (glottal stop) and kahako (macron).
At the recommendation of the Hale Kuamoo program of the University of Hawaii at Hilo, we are using Unicode characters to display the correct diacritical markings in Hawaiian words.
Not every browser or computer is fully capable of supporting Unicode (YET), so we are providing alternate methods of viewing the text. If unusual characters appear in Hawaiian words, you need to either upgrade your system or select an alternate view using the "Hawaiian language online" link in the footer of every page.
Most likely, yes. Please send your link and the proposed location(s) to content@hawaii.edu.
Most likely, no. Because space on the home page for featuring sites within the system is limited, there must be a compelling reason (from the perspective of the broadest audience) to do so.
You do have options to publicize an event or news release through prominent links on hawaii.edu. Find out about publicity services available to UH faculty and staff through External Affairs and University Relations.
As with any new electronic product, there are a few bugs to squash. Please use the feedback form and report to us:
There are some known issues with IE on Macintosh; please be aware that this browser will no longer be available for upgrade on Macintosh. A much better choice is the new Mac Safari browser.
Netscape 4.x browsers will always have problems with this site; this is a very old and particularly buggy browser.
There are options for getting around this.
Site updates will happen on an ongoing basis, depending on the type of content.
The calendar of events, press releases with breaking news and the online directory are updated as information is submitted into those databases by the appropriate users.
Broken links, spelling errors and incorrect information need to be fixed as soon as they are identified, usually within one working day.
Links, photos and other content can be uploaded as soon as they are approved, edited and correctly formatted for inclusion on the web, but timing depends on our workload and the urgency of the information.
The Spotlights highlight noteworthy achievements in the areas of Academics, Research, Technology, Arts & Culture, and Community. In addition, we have a "People" spotlight tab, where we will feature students, faculty and alumni of the UH System likely to appeal to prospective students. These features will change every week or two.
Spotlights are selected based on writing, illustrations and relevance to the subject area. We are always looking for great ideas! Contact ur@hawaii.edu.
Sure! All your suggestions, questions, corrections and even accolades are very welcome, simply look for the "Feedback" link that appears in the footer of every page, and enter your comments there. Every effort will be made to give you a personal reply to your comments.
A broadly representative committee including communicators, web people and administrators from across the system began working on the website redesign project in early 2003. This team was instrumental in defining and refining the vision of a system website.
Responsibility for the building the site was assigned to an inter-office team lead by Creative Services Director Cheryl Ernst. The technical team of Web developers in ITS is headed up by Rory Mather, while content for the site is managed by Jeela Ongley in Creative Services.
Day-to-day issues will continue to be shared between the two units. Simply use the feedback form to reach them. Or email webhead@hawaii.edu with technical problems or content@hawaii.edu with content issues.
