DESCRIPTION:Vibes, Ethics, and Confucian de 德\nA person's vibe impacts others in their midst, affecting the prevailing mood in subtle and even profound ways. One can be aware of this impact, or be ignorant of it, raising a number of issues not commonly addressed by contemporary philosophers. In this paper, I that Confucian thinkers theorized about the importance of vibes throughout the classical period, most notably in their discussions of de 德 (potency, effective personal power). I argue that thinking about vibes can be a novel and productive exercise for ethicists and moral psychologists today, as the category of vibes cuts across others (such as ‘persons’ and ‘actions’) that have traditionally been of interest to them.
