DESCRIPTION:“Constructing Post-Soviet Stardom: Auteur and the State in the Case of Renata Litvinova.”\n\nAs Richard Dyer's research on stars does not explain or describe the\nRussian star system due to its historical and cultural difference from\nHollywood, I analyze the construction of Russian stardom and describe\nits architectural principles such as the close connection of the film industry\nto the state and its imperial nature, the understanding of cinema as an\nart but not entertainment, and the director-centered mode of\nproduction. These factors form a unique figure of a star director,\nusually in the transition from a previous acting career. Renata\nLitvinova, a leading Russian female director, presents an example of\nsuch a transition.\n\n\n\nOlga Mukhortova, ABD serves as an Instructor of Russian at UH-Mānoa\nand writes her dissertation on star and celebrity studies to complete\nher Ph.D. degree at the University of Pittsburgh in Slavic and Film\nStudies. While working for 20 years as a teacher of Russian for\nnon-Russian students, Olga conducts her research in the fields of\nempire and post-colonial studies, women studies, and contemporary\nRussian film.
