DESCRIPTION:Lead artists Leilani Chan and Ova Saopeng of TeAda Productions will talk about how Masters of the Currents combines community based story collection and social justice practices with devised ensemble techniques (TeAda Methodology) to create a theatrical performance built with the involvement of the Micronesian community and partner organizations. Masters of the Currents is the first nationally touring play about the Micronesian experience in the US. For the past three years, Leilani and Ova have worked intimately with the Micronesian and climate refugee communities in Honolulu and are excited to share their experience before heading out on tour in Maui, Hilo, and in the fall, San Francisco for its continental premiere.\n\n\n\n\nLeilani Chan is an award winning performance artist, actor, playwright, director, cultural worker, Founding Artistic Director of TeAda Productions, and the playwright and director of Masters of the Currents. Born and raised in Hawai’i, Leilani attended Hampshire College and obtained her M.F.A. from U.C. Irvine .\n\n\n\nOva Saopeng is an actor, writer, teaching artist, Co-Artistic Director of TeAda Productions, and the playwright and acting ensemble member of Masters of the Currents. Born in Savannakhet, Laos and raised in Honolulu, Hawai'i, Ova received his BA in Theater from the University of Southern California.
