DESCRIPTION:The Library Treasures Initiative is pleased to host the first of the AY2018-2019 library colloquia featuring its special collections! The Great Trigonometrical Survey of India took nearly 70 years to finally map the Indian subcontinent. Precise measurements, 100 ft chains, specialized custom-built instruments, and crews of 700 people were needed to carry out this work. Survey towers still watch over the landscape. We are excited to have two  presenters: (1) South Asia Studies Librarian, Karen Kadohiro Lauer, will tell the story behind Hamilton Library’s volumes of the Synopsis of the Results of the Operations of the Great Trigonometrical Survey of India; and (2)Geospatial Librarian, Ted Kwok, will present the collections and tools the MAGIS (Maps, Aerial Photographs, & GIS) department has to offer. Other Asia Department librarians will also share rare and unique maps in their collections.\n\nThe Library Treasures Initiative is sponsored by Thomas Hale Library and by an anonymous donor who supports the Initiative's activities from AY 2018-2019 through AY 2020-2021.\n
