DESCRIPTION:Prof. Yoonkyung Lee of the Univ. of Toronto will discuss political activists and political parties in the Republic of Korea in the 2018 Andrews Chair Public Lecture, titled “Between the Streets and the Assembly: Protests, Activists, and Political Parties in Korea.” Lee, a political sociologist specializing in labor politics, social movements, political representation, and the political economy of neoliberalism, is the current Arthur Lynn Andrews Visiting Professor of Asian and Pacific Studies in the UH School of Pacific and Asian Studies. In her lecture, Lee will examine the question of why Koreans' frequent public protest movements fail to lead to the strengthening of political parties.
