DESCRIPTION:Register for the Be a NASA GLOBE Observer workshop series offered by the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa (OLLI-UHM) and learn how to make environmental observations that complement NASA satellite data and help scientists studying Earth and the global environment. \n\nThe 4-part hands-on workshop series will be held from 10 a.m. to noon on February 20, February 27, March 6 and March 13 at Krauss Hall #111 (2500 Dole Street) on the UH Mānoa campus. Led by Russanne Low, science lead for NASA's GLOBE Observer Mosquito Habitat Mapper citizen science program, the first workshop will teach participants how to identify, collect and submit their observations about Hawaii’s mosquito habitats through the free GLOBE Observer app.\n\nWorkshop topics include:\n\nFebruary 20: Introduction to GLOBE Observer/ Mosquito Citizen Science - Become part of the network of educators, students, public health officials, citizens, and even space scientists who work together to identify mosquito larvae and develop critical mitigation strategies to reduce the outbreak of mosquito-borne diseases. \n\nFebruary 27: Land Cover Change\nBecause land cover is critical to many processes on Earth and contributes to a community’s vulnerability to disasters like fire, floods or landslides, scientists need detailed and regularly updated land cover maps. Webinar presentation by Peder Nelson, Science Lead, Land Cover NASA GLOBE Observer followed by field observations as part of the class, led by Low.\n\nMarch 6: Citizen Science: What did you find? - Q and A with GLOBE Observer team members. How to access and map data, using web tools, and introduction to Clouds. Led by Russanne Low and Cassie Soeffing, Senior Educator, NASA GLOBE Observer. \n\nMarch 13: Clouds - Clouds play an important role in transferring energy from the Sun to different parts of the Earth system. Since clouds can change rapidly, scientists need frequent observations from citizen scientists. Led by Marilé Colon Robles, Science Lead, Clouds, NASA GLOBE Observer.\n\nThe Be a NASA GLOBE Observer workshop series is free and open to the public. Due to space limitations, registration is required.  Participants must bring a tablet or smart phone to the workshop for hands-on activities.
