Interestingly enough, Matryoshka, or Russian nesting dolls, may have their origins in eastern Asian culture! The concept of nested wooden dolls may have originated from China, where some have been found going as far back as 1000 AD. The traditional shape and figure of the Matryoshka doll symbolizes fertility and the act of having dolls stacked within each other represented the act of childbirth and lineage; it also points to the resourcefulness of Russian women.
