DESCRIPTION:Did you know that ~87% of plants rely on animals for pollination? Pollination services are crucial for natural ecosystem function as well as large scale production of agricultural crops. Unfortunately, pollinators across the world are in decline and in need of conservation. This course will cover different groups of pollinators, both native and non-native, that are found in Hawai’i. Participants will learn to identify different species of insects and birds, and which plants can be planted in your backyard garden in order to attract and conserve these pollinators. The instructor will then lead the group on a hike around the Arboretum to observe some of these plants, and if we’re lucky their pollinators as well. Upon completion of the course, each student will receive a native Hawaiian plant that can be planted in your garden in order to attract pollinators.\n\nInstructor: Tim Kroessig, UH Lyon Arboretum Horticulture Manager
