DESCRIPTION:Whither Our America?  How Contemporary Immigration Reveals Our Sense of Belonging, Community, and Citizenship\n\n\nIn 2007, Louis Mendoza cycled around the Mainland of the United States. Over the course of six months and 8,500 miles, he met and spoke with people across the country to discuss their experience with immigration and immigrants and the impact this was having on local communities. Mendoza published two books based on his experience, A Journey Around Our America: A Memoir on Cycling, Immigration, and the Latinoization of the U.S., and Conversations Across Our America: Talking About Immigration and the Latinoization of the U.S. This presentation will draw on lessons from that journey and discuss ways in which debates on citizenship, belonging, and national identity continue to divide the public.\n\nCo-sponsored by: American Studies; Ethnic Studies; History; International Cultural Studies Certificate Program; Languages and Literatures of Europe and America; Political Science; La Raza Unida
