DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a Virtual Public Seminar\n\nFinding Thermopylae in Marawi: Revisiting the 2017 Siege of the Philippines' Islamic City\n\nfeaturing\n\nCriselda Yabes\n\nJournalist and Author\n\nPatricio Abinales\n\nProfessor, University of Hawaii at Manoa\n\nOn May 23, 2017, a group of militants claiming allegiance to ISIS seized the Islamic City of Marawi in the southern island of Mindanao, Philippines. It took the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) five months to liberate the city. Criselda Yabes visited Marawi several times during and after the siege and is now finishing a book about this fateful event. This webinar will include an overview of the events leading to the Marawi crisis along with insights and reflections on the war zone in Marawi City and the town of Butig, assessing the protagonists and Wahhabism's corrosive influence on Sunni Muslim Filipinos. Featured speakers Yabes, joining us from Manila, and Abinales are both from the Mindanao region.\n\nCriselda Yabes is one of a handful of Filipino journalists who write about the Philippine military. She has two books on the Armed Forces of the Philippines. The first, Boys from the Barracks, tells the story of the colonels who plotted coups against Presidents Ferdinand Marcos and Corazon Aquino. The second book, Peace Warriors, is about the shift in the AFP's strategy from body counts to winning hearts and minds in its war against Muslim separatists in Mindanao. \n\nPatricio N. Abinales teaches at the Asian Studies Program, University of University of Hawai?i at Ma?noa. He is the co-author of State and Society in the Philippines (2017).
