DESCRIPTION:In the past several decades, it has been observed obvious diminishing trend of ice cover in the polar regions. This opens the possibility for using Northern Sea route all year round. Nevertheless, with the retreat of ice cover, the fetch for waves to grow also increases. Consequently, wave climate deteriorates in both Arctic and Antarctic. In the meantime, the human activities in these regions such as fishing, tourism as well as exploration of hydrocarbon resources also become more frequent. In order to elevate the safety levels for humans in the harsh environment existing in polar regions, it is very essential to predict the wave climate accurately.\n\nIn this seminar, I will talk about the status of predicting the wave conditions in ice infested waters. Firstly, the mathematical representation of waves is given. Based on this, the fundamentals of the most advanced numerical model for simulating waves in the polar regions will be introduced. Afterwards, typical theoretical models implemented in the numerical model to describe the wave-ice interactions are presented. In the end, case studies are provided to identify the capabilities and challenges in employing the numerical tool to model the wave climates in the polar regions.\n\n***Please join us ten minutes early for a virtual coffee hour hosted by Dr. Deniz Gedikli.***\n\nHongtao Li, PhD\n\nDepartment of Ocean and Resources Engineering\n\nSchool of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology\n\nUniversity Of Hawaii at Manoa\n\nZoom Meeting ID: 998 4768 3823\n\nPasscode: 372436\n
