DESCRIPTION:The architect and designer Alfred Preis, who came to Honolulu as a refugee from Nazi-occupied Austria, is best known for his elegant design of the USS Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor. However, he was also a key figure in the development of a distinctive Hawai 'i regional modernism at midcentury. Using design ideas that he learned during his formative years and education in Vienna, Preis integrated important aspects of Austrian modernism with the Hawai'i climate, its materials, and its peoples.\n\nLaura McGuire is an architecture and design historian in the UHM School of Architecture. Her current research focuses on migrants and refugees from Central Europe to the United States from the interwar period until midcentury. In addition to her recent work on Alfred Preis, she has published extensively about the Austrian-American architect and architectural theorist, Frederick Kiesler. More information about Dr. McGuire, along with a selection of her publications can be found at https://manoa-hawaii.academia.edu/LauraMcGuire.\n\nMeeting ID: 973 3082 9936\nPassword: 7hcYfA\nLink: https://hawaii.zoom.us/j/97330829936
