DESCRIPTION:Local boy Alton Takiyama-Chung grew up with the stories, superstitions, and the magic of the Hawaiian Islands.  He tells stories of the Plantation Days, the Japanese-American experience of WWII, Asian folktales, Hawaiian legends, and of course, ghost stories.  He has been a featured teller at the National Storytelling Festivals, and at international storytelling festivals in the Cayman Islands, Singapore, Vietnam, India, and Thailand.  He is also a former Chairman of the Board of Directors of National Storytelling Network, the national organization for US storytellers.\n\n\nFolktales from Near and Far\nTuesday, March 23 at 10:00am\n\nCome journey with us with folktales from around the world without leaving the comforts of home. Travel to Korea, where a boy collects stories and stuffs them into a bag; to Africa, where a beautiful necklace becomes the reason for jealousy and deceit; and to Ireland, where a poor piper plays a joke on an unfriendly farmer and his wife. Years ago, Alton was lucky enough to interview Charles Ishikawa, a retired principal and schoolteacher, who grewup in a plantation camp near Waipahu. Hear his stories from his “hanabata days,” as a rascal growing up in the yearsjust before WWII.\n\nLegends from Old Hawai‘i\nThursday, March 25 at 10:00am\n\nIn Hawai‘i, we are lucky to have such a rich tradition of folktales and legends. Take a few legends of Pele, the Goddess of the Volcano, add in a shark tale or two, stir in an escapade of the ultimate trickster and demi-god, Maui, and we have the makings of a fun time. Sit back and enjoy these traditional tales and perhaps one or two “new” undiscovered favorites.
