DESCRIPTION:Dr. Nēpia Mahuika, Senior Lecturer, Convenor History Program, Graduate Student Advisor from the University of Waikato, Aotearoa/New Zealand will present Indigenous Peoples and Oral History: Politics and Ethics. Dr. Mahuika will be sharing his book, Rethinking Oral History and Tradition: An Indigenous Perspective published by Oxford University Press in 2019.  This book challenges the field of oral history and how it has disregarded and marginalized Indigenous oral accounts.  Drawing on Māori as a case study, he advocates for a reimagining of the oral history field, which led to the 2020 Oral History Association Book Award.  He will share his work on oral history method, ethics, politics, theory and its implications for Indigenous peoples. Moderated by Dr. Davianna McGregor, Professor of Ethnic Studies and Director of Center for Oral History and Micah Mizukami, Associate Director of Center for Oral History.
