DESCRIPTION:The Center for Teaching Excellence presents the second of two special interactive seminars by\nVisiting Scholar and Professor Harry Hubball, University of British Columbia, Canada\n\nScholarly Approaches to Peer Review of Teaching in a Research-intensive University Context:\nSummative and Formative Practices in Multi-disciplinary Settings\n\nWednesday, December 8, 2021\n11:30 am–12:45 pm\nLocation: Online Event\n\nThis presentation describes an institutional initiative intended to address many of these historical\nshortcomings through the development of scholarly, and therefore more credible, approaches to the\nPRT within and across the disciplines at the University of British Columbia (UBC), Canada. The\npeer-review of teaching leadership initiative, led by a team of UBC national teaching fellows, was\nfuelled by institutional concerns about the quality of student learning experiences and the\neffectiveness of teaching in a multi-disciplinary research-intensive university context. Canadian\nuniversities have long recognized the importance of attending to the evaluation of teaching practices in their particular context; however, the enactment of localized scholarship directed at these practices remains very much in its infancy.\n\nIssues addressed in this presentation include:\n-contemporary approaches to the evaluation of teaching in higher education\n- faculty “buy-in” and the evaluation of teaching in a research-intensive university\n- scholarly approaches to summative and formative performance reviews of teaching (PRT)\n- Faculty-specific engagement in summative and formative (informal to formal) PRT\ntraining and implementation\n- strategic institutional supports (funding, expertise, mentoring, technological resources)\n\nFollowing a brief introduction to compare and contrast related international contexts for PRT, this\ninteractive presentation will engage participants in a dialogue around key processes, challenges and\noutcomes.\n\nTo register online, for more information about this event, or to meet with Dr. Hubball individually,\nplease visit: http://www.cte.hawaii.edu/events.html
