DESCRIPTION:How Clean is Clean Enough? Methods to Assess Environmental\nRisks Posed by Releases of Petroleumby\nDr. Roger Brewer\nHawai‘i Department of Health\n\nPetroleum constitutes perhaps the most common type of environmental\ncontamination on a global scale. From small gas stations to tank farms,\npipelines and large oil fields, the assessment of the risk to human health\nand the environment is challenging due to the complex composition of\npetroleum products. This presentation reviews the fate of petroleum when\nreleased to the environment and the chemistry and toxicity of\npetroleum-related contaminants in the air, water, and soil. The risk\nassessment is defined in terms of three distinct groups of compounds: (1)\nindividually targeted and well-studied compounds such as benzene, toluene,\nethylbenzene, xylenes, and naphthalene (BTEXN); (2) non-specific aliphatic\nand aromatic hydrocarbons collectively referred to as “Total Petroleum\nHydrocarbon (TPH)”; and (3) degradation compounds related to BTEXN and\nTPH mixtures, collectively referred to as “Hydrocarbon Oxidation Products\n(HOPs).” Risk is most often driven by TPH and/or HOPs compounds due to\ntheir overwhelming dominance in the contaminated media. This highlights the\nneed to test for and consider these compounds as part of a human health and\necological risk assessment. \nRegister for meeting:\nhttps://hawaii.zoom.us/meeting/register/tJcqcO-hqDgsHtxMGHwXGAF35HdYHwglbadZ
