The course was designed for the broad audience of the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa undergraduate students and has been successful in attracting students of all disciplines. The general goal is to expose students to ocean science and demonstrate how the ocean plays an essential role in everyday life. ORE203 gives an overview of ocean engineering but is told through “surfing”. While the course material is not new, the way in which wave science is contrasted with the intuitive and sometimes Indigenous perspectives from Hawai`i and across the Pacific gives a unique and possibly more holistic view of the phenomena. The seminar will give an overview of Surf Science and Culture emphasizing varied perspectives of the ocean.
