DESCRIPTION:The campus community is invited to honor and celebrate Alice Augusta Ball, the university’s first Black graduate and a pioneering scientist who discovered an effective injectable form of oil from the chaulmoogra tree, which became the most effective treatment for Hansen’s disease (leprosy) in the first half of the 20th century.\n\nThe short program honoring Alice Ball includes UH and community members who will pay tribute to her and her academic and scientific contributions. Individuals are welcome to bring a flower or lei, and at the end of the program, place it at the bronze plaque created in memory of Alice Ball.\n\n\nFebruary 28 was proclaimed as “Alice Augusta Ball Day” in Hawaiʻi by Gov. David Ige in 2022. Governor Green also proclaimed Alice Augusta Ball Day in 2023 and 2024. \n\n\n(For past events, see the UH News story in 2022 and 2024.)\n\n
