DESCRIPTION:You are invited to our final colloquium of the semester:\n\nSelling the Future:\nCommunity, Hope, and Crisis in the Early History of Japanese Life Insurance\nDr. Ryan Moran (Ethnic Studies / U. of Hawai'i at Mānoa)\n\nDr. Ryan Moran is a historian whose work explores the intersections of science, empire, capitalism, and race in modern Japan and the Asia-Pacific. Their first book, Selling the Future (Cornell UP, 2024), examines the history of Japanese life insurance as a commodified form of community.\n\nCurrently, they are developing a new project on the science of ability in twentieth-century Japan, including labor science and educational testing. A fifth-generation Okinawan on their mother's side, they are excited to reconnect with Hawaii while joining UH Ethnic Studies and engaging students and community groups around racial and environmental justice.\n\nDate: Friday, November 7th, 2025\nTime: 12:00 pm - 1:15 pm\nPlace: Crawford 115\n\nPlease share this flyer widely throughout your networks. Refreshments will be available.\n\n\nMahalo!
