Traditional development strategies such as hardened shorelines, graded coastal plains, and armored channels often fail to capture the value provided by natural systems. Drawing on 20 years of experience addressing coastal hazard risks in Hawaiʻi, Dr. Foley will discuss the importance of a regional, systems‑based approach to coastal design. He will highlight the role of natural hybrid infrastructure, which integrates ecosystem services with coastal structures to improve long‑term benefits, performance, and resilience.
