DESCRIPTION:"Gazing into the Eyes (of Daphnia), Where You Shall Glimpse Evolution" - Speaker: Dr. Jeff Dudycha, Professor, Department of Biological Sciences, University of South Carolina *************************** Abstract: Interspecific variation of eye structure and vision provides a foundation for understanding the evolution of eyes, but it is necessarily a retrospective understanding grounded in products rather than processes of evolutionary change.  We set out to shed light on evolution in action as it shapes variation of eye size in Daphnia to understand visual evolution at the inter- and intra-specific scales.  Along the way, our studies of eye size have incorporated spontaneous mutations, selection in natural populations, phenotypic plasticity, sexual dimorphism, and the fitness costs of vision.  Looking forward, we seek clues to understanding the ecological function of vision through behavior and molecular evolution.
