ArcGIS & TLS 1.2

ESRI is committed to providing strong security for the ArcGIS platform by using the latest industry standards and best practices for security protocols. In order to meet the new standards, starting April 16, 2019, ESRI will be updating ArcGIS Online to enforce the use of TLS (Transport Layer Security) version 1.2 only. Therefore, if you are a participant under the UH ESRI Site License Program, the mandatory update to TLS 1.2 may affect your use of the ArcGIS software and services.

This update is likely to affect users that are running older versions of ArcGIS software. If you do not update and validate your system's support for TLS v1.2, you may lose your ability to connect to ArcGIS Online. More information regarding ESRI's support for TLS can be found at: support.esri.com/en/tls

    • Common Questions:

    • What is TLS?
TLS or “Transport Layer Security” is a widely deployed network security protocol. It provides privacy and data integrity between communicating applications over a network. You use TLS whenever accessing ArcGIS Online services, such as basemaps, geoprocessing services, and the Living Atlas, from ArcGIS Desktop, ArcGIS Enterprise, and other applications.
    • I have ArcGIS 10.7, am I ready to go for April 16?
Yes. ArcMap 10.7 already supports TLS 1.2.
    • I have ArcGIS 10.6.1 (or earlier), am I ready to go for April 16?
No, action must be taken. ESRI recommends to install the appropriate ArcGIS Desktop TLS patch. This enables ArcGIS Desktop to run TLS 1.2, but does not affect other applications.
Note: Users on 10.3.1 and earlier will need to have a version of .NET that supports TLS 1.2 on their Operating System. For more information, visit: How to configure the Windows operating system to use TLS 1.2.
    • I have ArcGIS Pro 2.x, am I ready to go on April 16?
Yes. ArcGIS Pro 2.0-2.3 already supports TLS 1.2.
    • I have ArcGIS Pro 1.2 and earlier, am I ready to go on April 16?
No, action must be taken. Visit: How to enable TLS 1.2 on ArcGIS Pro or upgrade to a newer version of ArcGIS Pro (V1.2 - 1.4.1 have been retired).
    • I have ArcGIS Enterprise version 10.6, am I ready to go on April 16?
Yes. ArcGIS Enterprise 10.6.1 - 10.4.1 already supports TLS 1.2. Check the flowchart to see if your deployment will be affected.
    • I have ArcGIS Server, am I ready to go on April 16? - Installations on Windows Server 2012 R2 and higher: already supports TLS 1.2 when using default configuration settings.
      - Installations on Windows Server 2008 R2 or 2012: Some OS configurations may be needed to support TLS 1.2.
      - Installations on Windows Server 2008: Some functions will not work. Recommended to upgrade to a newer version of Windows Server.
    • I only use ArcGIS Online (AGOL), am I ready to go on April 16th?
Yes. You won't need to do anything to connect to your AGOL account.
    • I need advanced technical support. What do I do?
You will not be able to contact Tech Support directly. Email sladmin@hawaii.edu with the contact person's full name, email address, phone number and a description of the issue (screenshots if possible) and we will submit the request on your behalf.

If there are any questions regarding this, please call the ITS Site License Office at (808) 956-2404 or send email to sladmin@hawaii.edu.
