MS Office 2003/2007 FAQs:FAQ #1Q: Can I purchase the license for Office 2003 (Standard or Professional) License instead of Office 2007? A: No. Microsoft only offers the most currect version released for Office. You do however, have the option to purchase the Office 2007 License and downgrade this to Office 2003 instead. If you purchase the Office 2007 Enterprise license, this can be downgraded to Office 2003 Professional only. A benefit of purchasing the Office 2007 License now is that when you are ready to upgrade to Office 2007 at a later time, you may do so at no additional license cost since that is what you initially purchased.
FAQ #2 A: Yes. Microsoft has added the new Office Open XML Formats to Excel, PowerPoint and Word 2007. This means that if you save a file within Office 2007 (default), it is saved as a new XML extension. Previous versions of Office suites will not be able to open these files, until the Microsoft Compatibility Pack is installed. (Word 07 saves files as name.docx instead of the usual name.doc, Excel saves files as name.xlsx instead of name.xls, etc.) The other alternative for this issue is to use the Save As option in the 2007 application and choose to save the file in an older format. (EXAMPLE: In Word 2007, Save as Type: "word 93-2003" doc) More Information on this Issue
FAQ #3 A: No. Unfortunately ITS is still conducting tests with this new version and are not officially supporting this yet due to the incompatibility issues this product has. ITS is however offering assistance on a "best effort" level.
FAQ #4 A: Yes. All versions of Office 2007 are available for loan through the ITS Site License Office as long as the appropriate license is purchased under this licensing program.
MS Windows XP & Vista FAQs:FAQ #20Q: Can I buy the license for Windows XP Professional instead of Windows Vista? A: No. Microsoft only offers the most currect version released for Windows. You do however, have the option to purchase the Windows Vista license and downgrade this to Windows XP Professional. The benefit of purchasing the Windows Vista License now is that when you are ready to upgrade to Vista at a later time, you may do so at no additional license cost since that is what you initially purchased (Vista CD/DVD must be purchased for the installation - no loans are available for Vista).
FAQ #21 A: No. Unfortunately ITS is still conducting tests with this new version and are not officially supporting this yet due to the incompatibility issues this product has with many UH applications and many other software companies. ITS is however offering assistance on a "best effort" level.
FAQ #22 A: No. Under our licensing contract, we are only allowed to offer the Windows Vista Business Upgrade License. UH customers also have the option of purchasing Software Assurance for Vista, which entitles the license to be upgraded to either Vista Enterprise or Vista Ultimate. FAQ #23 A: Yes. UH customers who purchase the "Vista Business License with Software Assurance", or the "Vista Business Software Assurance License" (for qualified systems only - see next FAQ for details), you are allowed to install Windows Vista Ultimate. NOTE: Windows Vista Ultimate is a premium consumer OS for home and small business users. Although designed for home and small business use, Microsoft does offer Windows Vista Ultimate to Software Assurance customers under coverage for Windows Vista Business. However, we want to clearly inform our customers that Windows Vista Enterprise is optimized for them and that they should standardize on Windows Vista Enterprise as Windows Vista Ultimate is not designed for enterprise-wide deployment. Limitations of Windows Vista Ultimate in an enterprise environment:
FAQ #24 A: Vista Enterprise & Ultimate are higher versions than Vista Busn. Ent provides higher levels of data protection using hardware-based encryption technology. It also includes tools to improve application compatibility and enables organizations to standardize by using a single worldwide deployment image. Ult provides the same as Ent but also includes Media Center, HD MovieMaker and DVD authoring and a few other extras.
Vista Business Overview
FAQ #25 A: In order to be licensed for Enterprise or Ultimate, you must purchase the "Windows Vista Business License with Software Assurance" (SA) product or the "Windows Vista Business SA" (for qualifying computers only; see FAQ#26). Under Microsoft's promotion, for customers participating in SA, they are entitled to a higher version called Vista Enterprise, or even Vista Ultimate. Vista Ent nor Ultimate is not available as a license-only product - use of these versions are restricted for those with valid SA Licenses.
FAQ #26 A: The first option is to purchase the Windows OS license plus the fee for Software Assurance. The second option is the fee for Software Assurance ONLY, which is only available for qualifying computers. To be qualifed, any new computer purchased from a manufacturer has a window of 90 days from the date of purchase to add on SA ONLY. If it has been more than 90 days, you would need to purchase both the license again, plus SA to utilize the SA benefits (upgrade to Enterprise or Ulitmate).

FAQ #29 A: The Windows OS license under this licensing program is the UPGRADE version ONLY. It does not cover the full Windows desktop operating system; it only provides an upgrade license for a qualifying underlying operating system license. If you have built your own computer that did not come preloaded with any OS, or if you are adding an additional OS (dual boot), you are NOT eligible for the upgrade license. If you choose to use any Windows upgrade products to fully install Windows on new unlicensed PCs or to dual boot, your department will be in violation of the Micrsosoft License Agreement. If you would like additional information, please visit the Microsoft website at: http://www.microsoft.com/licensing/highlights/osbits.mspx. If you need the full version of the Windows Operating System, please check with the UH Bookstore or any retail store for the boxed product.
