InCommon Certificate Program


Information Technology Services (ITS) has set up a contract with InCommon/Internet2 to participate in the InCommon Certificate Program for the University of Hawaii (UH) System. Sectigo (formerly Comodo) is the designated certification authority for these licenses. Any UH Department in need of an SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) Certificate using the hawaii.edu domain for UH purposes may participate in this program at no charge. All certificates are issued for a 1-year duration; multi-year certs are no longer available.

Certificates Types:

  • InCommon SSL Certificate (SHA-2)
    Example 1: www.dept.hawaii.edu
  • InCommon Multi-Domain (MD) SSL Certificate / Unified Communication Cert (UCC)
    Example: dept.hawaii.edu
    SANs: www.dept.hawaii.edu, one.dept.hawaii.edu, two.dept.hawaii.edu
    (there are no limit to the number of SANs you list)

ITS VS (virtual server) customers: please skip the instructions below and contact itscs@hawaii.edu directly for your SSL request.
UH Hosted Website Service certs: please contact sladmin@hawaii.edu with your SSL request, providing the information in STEP #2 below ONLY (no CSR is required).


How to request for a UH InCommon SSL Certificate


  1. Generate your Certificate Signing Request (CSR) using the following example:
    What is a CSR?

      Organization Name:
      Organizational unit:
      Country Code:
      State or Province:
      Locality:
      Common Name:
      University of Hawaii
      (Your Department name here)
      US
      HI
      Honolulu
      yourcertname.hawaii.edu

    Note: InCommon requires that you create 2048-bit key pairs.
    All certs will be issued as SHA-2.

  2. Send the CSR to sladmin@hawaii.edu with the following information:
    • Common Name:
    • Cert Type:
    • SANs (for MD Certs only):
    • Issue Date:
    • Department:
    • Technical Contact Name:
    • Technical Contact Email Address:
      (issued cert is sent by email; more than one email address can be listed)
    • Technical Contact Phone#:
  3. The Certificate will be requested on the issue date listed, however the Certificate Authority makes the final approval. This can take anywhere from 10 minutes to 1 business day. Once approved, the Technical Contact(s) will receive an email with the certificate info.
