Q:
How long does it take to complete the MA?
A:
The length of time for the MA varies depending upon the student. The most common lengths are 4 or 5 semesters. This depends upon the number of credits that a student takes each semester, as well as how long it takes the student to complete the thesis or scholarly paper.
Q:
Do students from the MA go on for the PhD at UH?
A:
Several students go on for a PhD, though most do not enter the UH Manoa program. This is primarily because the UH Manoa program is very small and very competitive. However, we have had students go on to such programs as Stanford, British Columbia, Penn State, UCLA, and other very fine universities. However, that being said, approximately 11 of the current 21 PhD students received their MA from our program. Some of them went away for a period of time before coming into the program, and others applied directly from the MA.
