Meet Our New Student Assistant in Alumni Engagement

photo of Chase Nomura, Student AssistantAloha a welina mai kākou. My name is Chase Kealiʻimalu Nomura. I was born and raised on the island of Maui where I graduated from Kamehameha Schools. I attended University of Hawaiʻi Maui College before transferring to the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, where I am currently an undergraduate student in the Second Language Studies (SLS) department. My interest in SLS came from the diversity of languages that are found in Hawaiʻi. While growing up everyone close to me spoke Hawaiʻi Creole, my mother spoke English, my grandfather spoke Samoan, my cartoons were in Japanese, and my ancestors spoke Hawaiian. There was a plethora of languages and the ability to learn another language became very important to me which is why I chose my SLS major. I am working as Undergraduate Student Assistant in Alumni Engagement with Graham Crookes, Professor & SLS Department Chair, and Emily Lee, SLS Program Specialist.
