Meeting with an academic advisor is an essential step in preparing students to be successful in the pursuit of their major in the Department of Second Language Studies. The Colleges of Arts and Sciences states that:
Students must be active partners in the advising process. This responsibility includes researching curricular and co-curricular opportunities, creating educational plans, and presenting those plans to an advisor.
Advisors do not make decisions for students. Rather, they discuss options both supporting and challenging plans in order to encourage rigorous critical thinking, self-assessment, and in-depth reflection.
To this end, SLS majors must attend regular advising sessions with an SLS advisor at least once every semester. The purpose of these sessions is to:
- Give students the opportunity to create an academic plan for their major to help them keep track of expectations both within the SLS major, as well as those outlines by the UH Manoa General Education Core requirements.
- Discuss avenues of professional development during the course of the SLS major, including opportunities to gain professional experience and developing and organizing items to include in their Curriculum Vitae and professional portfolio. For further questions regarding this, please refer to the section on Professional Advising.
Before meeting with an advisors, students should fill out the Advising Preparation Survey and sign up for an available advising appointment time (the SLS advisors will email all SLS majors to let them know how to do this).
To make an appointment with an academic advisor, email the SLS BA Coordinator (firstname.lastname@example.org).
