Preface

This SLS Student Handbook has been prepared to assist you, the student, in making your progress through your program as smooth as possible. It is intended for use by undergraduate and graduate students in the BA, MA in SLS, Advanced Graduate Certificate, and PhD in SLS programs, although the bulk of information is directed at and most relevant to the MA program. In its current, web-based incarnation, it maintains much of its original organizational structure.

We have tried to include the basic information you will need about the ins and outs of study in the Department of Second Language Studies. We know you appreciate the fact that rules and regulations in any institution change over time. We will try to make these handbook entries as current as possible. You should of course make yourself familiar with other sites within the UH web information environment that may contain information relevant to your student life.

The handbook is not a legal document. In compiling it we have tried to be as accurate as possible, but errors may occur. In this connection, the current issue of the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa Catalog takes precedence over these handbook entries.

We would appreciate any suggestions for improvement of the Handbook. Suggestions may be given to the (incoming) Department Chair, Prof. Graham Crookes.
