Employment Opportunities while at UHM

For those students who are interested, there are some employment opportunities within the field of SLS available while enrolled in our programs. Perhaps the most common is tutoring learners of English as a second language. Requests come to the Department of SLS on an ad hoc basis–it is, in fact, impossible to predict just when any such requests will come in. All such requests are directed to the staff member responsible for employment concerns, Ms. Priscilla Faucette (faucette@hawaii.edu). Requests for tutoring are posted to the SLS (email) Job List, which also lists domestic and international employment opportunities. Older hard copy notices are posted outside the Reading Room.

Very occasionally lectureships (as distinct from Graduate Assistantships) are available in the English Language Institute. Graduate students in the Department of SLS are generally given preference for these positions. (Lecturers are individuals hired to teach in various departments of the University when enrollment exceeds that which the normal cadre of professorial staff and graduate assistants can accommodate. See also Graduate Assistantships.)

The NICE Program (New Intensive Course in English), under the sponsorship of the Outreach College, occasionally hires graduate students to teach in its English conversation program, particularly in summer. Interested individuals may contact the NICE Program, Outreach College.

Following graduation, a variety of employment opportunities present themselves to the graduate. In the State of Hawai‘i itself there are sometimes job opportunities (although it should be recognized that full-time employment in ESL is not readily available, given that over 100 holders of the MA in ESL are currently in Hawai’i working in ESL-related employment). Institutions which offer ESL courses, and therefore employ ESL instructors include: Chaminade University of Honolulu, Hawai‘i Pacific University, Hawaii Tokai International College, Honolulu Community College, Kapi‘olani Community College, Leeward Community College, Maui Community College, and Kauai Community College. There are a number of private language schools on O‘ahu, which sometimes hire instructors of ESL.
