Incompletes
An ‘I’ is given to students who fail to complete a small but important part of a semester’s work before the semester grades are determined, if the instructor believes that the failure was caused by conditions beyond the student’s control and not by carelessness and procrastination. Students are expected to complete all courses. Therefore, students receiving an ‘I’ should contact the instructor to determine the steps to be taken to remove the ‘I’.
Deadlines: For removing an ‘I’ received in the fall semester, April 1 of the following semester; for removing an ‘I’ received in the spring semester, November 1 of the next semester. Note: These deadlines are the deadlines for the grades to be in the Office of Admission and Records. Therefore, made-up material must be in the hands of the instructor giving the ‘I’ grade at least one week BEFORE the deadline in order to ensure that the instructor has time to read and evaluate the material, process the necessary form, and turn it in to the department secretary.
Summer Session: Assignment of an ‘I’ grade during the Summer Session requires approval by the Dean of the Summer Session. If an approval is granted, ‘I’ make-upgrades must be reported to the Office of Admissions and Records by 1 November.
When an ‘I’ grade is assigned, an instructor may assign an alternate grade. If the ‘I’ is not removed by the deadline, the student’s transcript will then permanently show the alternate grade or, if the instructor has not indicated such a grade, an ‘F’. For graduate courses (600 or above), an Incomplete that is not made up by the deadline remains a permanent ‘I’ on the transcript. In the case of required courses, this will mean that a student must re-register for and retake the course.
Whenever possible, Incompletes should be avoided. Graduate assistants and those receiving tuition waiversare especially warned that ‘I’ grades are not viewed as satisfactory progress towards a degree. Incompletes that are not quickly made-up may therefore prohibit renewal of waivers or assistantships.
