E-mail

The SLS department is very e-mail dependent. Please use “netiquette” when emailing.

The <sls-l@lists.hawaii.edu> is a moderated list that includes ALL faculty and students in the department. There are other lists that involve various subsets of faculty and/or students. If a message is not directly related to all faculty and students, it is requested that other lists be used. Also, as a matter of internet/e-mail etiquette, people wishing to message others on topics different from general academic, university and departmental operations, such as notices of moving sales, apartment hunting/availability, and political issues and concerns, should clearly indicate the nature of their message in the subject heading so that others can determine whether or not to open and read it. In this vein as well, it is generally appreciated that senders not include attachments unless unavoidable or agreed-upon with the receiver ahead of time, and that extensive addressee lists and embedded messages in replies not be included in new messages.

Other department lists include:

  • slssa-l@lists.hawaii.edu — This includes members of SLSSA
  • sls-l@lists.hawaii.edu: This includes everyone on slsdep-l, everyone on hatesluh-l, visiting colleagues, and some alumni
  • slsfac-l@lists.hawaii.edu — This list includes only the graduate faculty.
  • slsdep-l@lists.hawaii.edu — This includes grad faculty, the secretaries, staff at the ELI and UHELP, and faculty at UHELP

Subscription to these lists may be made by petition to the list coordinators, either a faculty person (Kenny Harsch at kenton@hawaii.edu for the <sls-l>), or the SLLSA list coordinator.

Students wishing to obtain an e-mail address should consult the University of Hawai‘i Information and Technology Services Help Desk. Information for new users may be found at: http://www.hawaii.edu/infotech/newusers.html.
