Departmental publications

Occasional Papers

The Occasional Paper Series (which began publication in 1985) made available selected theses or scholarly papers written by students in the department. The series was a supplement to the departmental publication, UH Working Papers in Second Language Studies (formerly UHWP in ESL; see below). This series is no longer active.

SLSLetter

The Department of SLS published a newsletter, called the SLSLetter, once or twice a year. The purpose of the SLSletter is to keep alumni and other past members of the department abreast of what the department and its faculty and students are doing. It also contains announcements of happenings in the field of SLS such as upcoming conferences, etc.  This publication has been in abeyance for the last couple of years and will be restarted as an element of the Departmental homepage in the near future.

Upon graduation, students of the department should keep the department advised of their whereabouts. Moreover, any news items concerning the work and life of alumni are welcomed by the editor. Any such items should be emailed to the Chair (presently Graham Crookes <crookes@hawaii.edu>. In addition, the Departmental Facebook page welcomes contributions. “Like” us at

Second Language Studies (formerly Working Papers in SLS)

Second Language Studies is an online, bi-annual publication of the Department of Second Language Studies. The series presents work in progress by faculty members and graduate students.  Papers in Second Language Studies have the status of  ’progress reports’ and, in many instances, are published subsequently in revised form. JD Brown has been editor of the Departmental working papers since 1994.
