Career Placement Services, UH-M

During the final semester, each student is advised to go in person to Career Services, Queen Lili‘uokalani Center for Student Services (Rm. 212), 2600 Campus Rd., to open a credential file.

This file then becomes a depository for a student’s letters of recommendation. When a student (either before or after graduation) wants his/her letters of recommendation sent to a prospective employer, the Career Services will send a set of the letters. There is no charge for this service. If a student does not use the services within a 10-year period, the file is destroyed.

Letters of recommendation kept on file at Career Services are of two types: confidential and open. Some faculty members prefer not to write so-called open letters and will thus refuse requests for letters of recommendation unless the student waives access rights. (Hawai‘i State law requires the student to sign a waiver of access rights if letters of recommendation are to be kept confidential.)

A complete set of instructions on how the service operates is provided to the student at the time that a credential file is opened.

Career Placement Services is open from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. More information may be found at credential files.
